Japan Records Lowest Annual Births on Record, Dropping Below 700,000
Japan witnessed a historic demographic milestone last year as the number of births fell below 700,000 for the first time, according to government data released on Wednesday.
In 2024, a total of 686,061 babies were born—marking a decline of 41,227 from the previous year. This significant drop highlights the ongoing challenges Japan faces with its rapidly aging population.
With one of the lowest birth rates globally, Japan now holds the position of the world’s second-oldest population, trailing only behind Monaco, as per World Bank statistics.
